Bath girl rapist refused appeal bid

A man who snatched a six-year-old girl from her bath and raped her has failed in a bid to challenge his sentence.

Peter Voisey, who was jailed for life last December with a minimum term of 10 years, had his application for leave to appeal thrown out by three judges in London.

The judges, sitting at the Court of Appeal, ruled that Voisey had "no arguable ground of complaint" against his minimum term - the time he must serve before he can apply for release on parole.

Voisey, 35, sneaked in through the back door of the girl's home in North Tyneside on December 27 2005, put his gloved hand over her mouth and drove her off in his dilapidated van.

He stopped twice to sexually assault the terrified youngster then dumped her naked and bleeding in a snow-covered back lane near her home, where she was heard sobbing by neighbours.

Voisey, also known as Smith, of Blyth, Northumberland, had denied abduction and sexual offences, but was convicted after a trial at Newcastle Crown Court.

Sentencing Voisey, Judge David Hodson told him: "I am in no doubt whatsoever that you are a dangerous predatory male who poses a serious risk."

Mr Justice Walker, announcing the court's decision on Wednesday, stressed that although Voisey could seek parole after he had served the minimum term "it does not mean that he has been sentenced only to the minimum term."

He added: "He has been sentenced to life imprisonment and that means that so long as he poses a danger to others he must remain in prison."
