There have been angry protests about the BBC's refusal to show the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) broadcast.

The panel, which will include BBC Trust chairman Sir Michael Lyons, will look at appeals from people unhappy about the way the corporation responded to complaints.

The BBC and Sky refused to show the emergency appeal, arguing that to do so would compromise their impartiality.

BBC director general Mark Thompson said the decision not to broadcast the appeal was "absolutely" in line with the corporation's broader approach to impartiality and appeals.

"We are passionate about defending the BBC's impartiality and we worry with such an emotive and such a political story - the United Nations this morning describing it as a political crisis with humanitarian consequences," he told BBC Breakfast earlier this week.

The trust said more than 15,000 complaints had been received about the decision not to show the DEC appeal.

Part of the trust's role is to act as a court of final appeal for viewers who complain about the BBC and are unhappy with the way the management responds.

A large number of appeals are expected in this case, and the panel - chaired by Richard Tait from the trust's editorial standards committee and including trust vice-chairman Chitra Bharucha and Sir Michael - will look at them before making recommendations to the full trust.

More than 100 MPs from all parties have signed an early day motion criticising the BBC and Sky News for refusing to show the appeal.
