Beached mine detonated by bomb team

Bomb disposal experts have detonated a 1,500lb Second World War German mine after it was found washed up on a beach.

The Royal Navy, HM Coastguard, Natural England and Avon and Somerset Police, set up a one-mile exclusion zone around the device after it was spotted by fisherman Dave Saunders in mud on Stert Island, Somerset, on Thursday.

The 10ft, 26-inch diameter bomb, washed up some seven miles from Hinkley Point nuclear power station, at Bridgwater Bay Nature Reserve.

It is believed to be an explosive dropped from German aircraft to disrupt shipping lanes during the war.

Burnham-on-Sea Coastguards called out two rescue hovercraft, The Spirit Of Lelaina and Light Of Elizabeth, which took members of the Navy Explosives team out to the scene.

Disposal experts were set to detonate the mine on Friday night, but technical difficulties delayed the event.

Large crowds returned and lined the Esplanade at Burnham to watch the detonation.

Despite being on Stert Island for many years, the bomb has only recently become visible with shifting sands and mud.

Environmental public body Natural England has worked with the emergency services to ensure the safety of the nature reserve.

Bridgwater Bay is home to around 190 species of birds and several sites of historical interest, including 12th century fish weirs.
