Beckham at No 10 for talks with PM

Football superstar David Beckham has attended a private meeting with Gordon Brown.

The LA Galaxy midfielder chatted for almost an hour with Mr Brown at the Prime Minister's Number 10 Downing Street residence.

The former Manchester United and Real Madrid star reportedly arrived at Downing Street in his trademark shiny black Bentley.

The pair enjoyed informal discussions before Beckham, affectionately known as "Goldenballs", left just after 6pm on Tuesday.

A Downing Street spokesman said the meeting was a "genuinely private matter" and that Beckham had been invited at the behest of Mr Brown.

Beckham told the BBC: "He's (Mr Brown) interested in sports and his football, you know he is very interested in doing a lot for my academy and also getting involved in schools around the country as well."

He added: "He's a very good man, you know he's a man that's looking after our country and he is doing a very good job. I'm very proud to be here tonight."

Beckham has been training with Arsenal during the Major League Soccer close season so he can be fit for a possible England call-up under new manager Fabio Capello.

Beckham is hoping to be installed as captain for Capello's first match in charge - the February 6 friendly with Switzerland, when he would win his 100th cap.

Beckham also told the BBC he expected the Prime Minister to visit his football academy in London on Thursday.
