The YouGov survey for The Daily Telegraph puts the Conservatives on 43% - 11 points ahead of Labour on 32%, with the Liberal Democrats on 14%.

The paper said it was the Tories' biggest lead since 1988 and completely reverses an 11-point lead for Labour in September.

The findings come as another blow for Prime Minister Gordon Brown after the disclosure that Labour is facing the prospect of a police inquiry over the proxy donations scandal.

It comes after a series of setbacks over Northern Rock, the loss of the child benefit database and attacks by former military chiefs over the Government's alleged lack of support for the Armed Forces.
