Bill to end special needs disparity

An MP with a severely dyslexic son has launched a Bill to end the "patchwork quilt" of services for children with special needs.

Many parents struggle to get support for children with autism, dyslexia or other special needs as services vary widely across the country.

Sharon Hodgson's backbench Bill will require ministers to publish national figures showing how pupils with different disabilities are faring at school.

Currently, the Government does not provide this information centrally.

Mrs Hodgson, Labour member for Gateshead East and Washington West, said: "As a parent with a severely dyslexic son I know only too well the pressure and frustration many other parents face.

"Sometimes it can feel like the hoops you have to jump through will never end."

She said it would only be possible to improve education for children with special needs by studying reliable information about their progress at school.

"Publishing this information is the catalyst needed to make a long-term difference and end the unacceptable variation in provision," she said.

Mrs Hodgson came second in the ballot of MPs to introduce backbench Bills.

She claims to have the backing of the Government for her Special Educational Needs (Information) Bill.
