Blair attends Clinton conference

Former prime minister Tony Blair was among world leaders, celebrities and scholars who are aiming to tackle the world's problems.

The third Clinton Global Initiative conference in New York is expected to raise billions of pounds to help tackle the issues of global warming, poverty, health and education.

More than 10 billion dollars (£5bn) was pledged in the first two conferences, and participants were expected to pledge more this year.

Mr Blair joined celebrity couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, tennis star Andre Agassi and media mogul Rupert Murdoch on the conference's guest list this year.

As the three-day conference opened, former US President Bill Clinton and Florida Governor Charlie Crist announced plans for a new solar power plant as part of a 2.4 billion dollar (£1.2bn) clean energy programme in the Sunshine State.

"This is a huge deal for America and I think potentially a huge deal for people all around the world who want to do this," Mr Clinton said.

"As we all know, Florida is one of the sunniest places in America, but this is the sort of thing, if they can prove it works, it can be done in sunny places all over the world."

He went on: "If you mix it into your overall power mix, the extra cost is not particularly great."

At a luncheon session, Pitt announced that his Make It Right project was prepared to break ground by the end of the year on 150 affordable green homes in New Orleans' Lower Ninth Ward, which was devastated by Hurricane Katrina.

Delegates at the conference pay a 15,000 dollar (£7,500) registration fee and are also expected to commit time or money to the conference's big issues. Those who do not fulfil their pledges are not invited back.
