Blaze father 'killed his children'

Police believe a father killed his two children and set fire to the family home before stabbing himself to death.

The bodies of Iain Varma, 34, and his children, Chloe, four, and Zak, eight, were found in a terraced house in the quiet country town of North Tawton, Devon, early on Monday.

His barmaid wife, Alison, in her 30s, and two-year-old son Lee were not in the house at the time of the fire.

"There are family circumstances which have probably led to this," said a police spokesman.

Devon and Cornwall Police said inquiries were tending to suggest that Mr Varma killed his children and then himself.

A post-mortem has been carried out on Mr Varma but the results have not yet been released.

A spokesman said post-mortems on the two children have yet to be held.

"Hopefully the results of the post-mortems will back up this theory," said the spokesman.

Mrs Varma's 59-year-old father, who was arrested after the fire, was released on Monday.

The grandfather was detained by police just over two hours after the blaze at the home in Gowmans Terrace, North Tawton.
