Blaze hotel: More remains found

A second set of human remains has been found in the ruins of a burned-out seaside hotel, police said.

The discovery was made by officers searching the rubble of the Penhallow Hotel in Newquay, Cornwall, which was destroyed by fire on Saturday.

Physics teacher Peter Hughes died after attempting to rescue his 86-year-old mother from the blaze and two other people were missing after the blaze.

Police discovered the first set of remains on Tuesday.

A spokesman for Devon and Cornwall Constabulary said: "The search team have located what are believed to be another set of human remains at a different location on the site.

"The families of the two people who are unaccounted for have been advised, but the process to confirm the identification is just beginning."

The spokesman added that the search would continue for any other remains and any relevant evidence to assist the investigation.

Mr Hughes was in Cornwall on holiday with his mother, Monica, and his family have paid tribute to his dedication and love of his job. They spoke of the 43-year-old's enthusiasm, love of science and his dedication to his job as head of physics at Weston Road High School in Stafford.

An inquest heard that Mr Hughes, who died from inhaling smoke and toxic gas, was seen climbing out of the window on the third floor and shouted "I can't move my mum" before jumping.

Police have said they believe both missing people died in the fire.
