'Boring' schools may get inspection

20 January 2008
Ofsted chief inspector Christine Gilbert said research had found a link between poor quality education and pupils finding lessons boring.
She said: "Schools where pupils were saying they were less bored were performing much better than other schools.
"We might ask pupils whether they are bored."
Ms Gilbert's remarks came as she outlined plans to reform the school inspection system in England.
She said there would be a "stronger focus on well-being", although the details had not yet been finalised.
Inspectors are likely to make use of regular surveys of parents and pupils to decide which schools need inspecting, she suggested.
Ms Gilbert said: "Surveys might also provide important indicators of parents' and pupils' perceptions of... whether children feel safe or how well the health of children and young people is promoted in a school or even if pupils are happy in a school."
Parents can often sense that an apparently good school is beginning to slip, even before the change begins to hit exam results, she said.
