Saul Tomlinson was upstairs at his home in Prestwich, Greater Manchester, when three masked men broke through the front door as his father David was playing on the computer.
As they demanded car keys from his father, Saul was so scared he jumped out of the first-floor window and hid in a neighbour's garden.
He told BBC North West Tonight: "I just knew that something had gone wrong and something was going to happen so I just opened the window and jumped out.
"I just wanted to get away from the house so I ran to next door's garden and then I jumped in a bush so I could hide until it all ends."
Mr Tomlinson said: "The first I heard was a bang but I thought it was my girlfriend so I carried on playing on the computer, it was about 10pm.
"Next I heard was some running upstairs but again I thought it was my girlfriend.
"Next thing I know one of them had kicked the door so it burst open and they were standing there with the machetes threatening me to stay here, don't get up, don't move, don't phone the police and shouting 'where are the keys, where are the keys'."
The gang stole the family car and drove off in the direction of Daneshill.
Greater Manchester Police want to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the incident.
