The child was struck by a car in the St Mellons area of Cardiff.
He suffered serious injuries and is being treated at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff.
Police said the driver of the car, a metallic blue Peugeot 307, failed to stop after the incident which happened at Willowbrook Drive near its junction with Caerleon Close.
The car was driven off along Willowbrook Drive in the direction of Willowbrook Junior and Infant School.
It was later found in Arabella Street, in the Roath area of the city.
Inspector Ricky Thomas of South Wales Police said: "An appeal is made for any persons that witnessed the collision or can assist in the movement of the young child prior to the collision."
He said the boy was believed to have been with two other children of a similar age when the incident happened.
The inspector added: "Witnesses are also sought who may have seen the Peugeot car being driven in the St Mellons area of the city prior to the collision or after."
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Eastern Sector Roads Policing Unit on 02920 222111.
