Boy dies in Austrian mountain fall

The parents of a 12-year-old schoolboy who fell to his death during a half-term skiing trip to the Austrian Alps have spoken of their devastation at the loss of their "adventurous little boy".

Hayden Waller was trying to rescue a friend who slipped and fell down the mountain but lost his footing and plunged 30 feet on to rocks, breaking his neck.

In a statement, his mother, Hayley, said: "Everyone loved him. He was the most loveable, likeable child you have ever come across and we are absolutely devastated."

The couple issued a statement after flying to Austria to collect their son's body.

They said they had complete confidence in the way the trip was organised.

Mrs Waller said: "I want to make it clear that no-one should be blamed for this terrible accident.

"I am very confident that The Howard School staff and everyone involved did everything by the book. This was just a tragic accident.

"I cannot stress enough that people should not blame the school or any of the staff.

"Hayden's younger brother will be starting at The Howard in September and I would be perfectly happy to let him go on a similar trip."
