The movie bagged the best director award for Danny Boyle, best screenplay and best musical score.
"Golden Globes, or the GGs as we very affectionately refer to them -- your mad, pulsating affection for our film is much appreciated. Really, deeply appreciated," Boyle said.
Kate Winslet won two awards, for best supporting-actress in The Reader and best dramatic actress for her role in Revolutionary Road.
The Globe wins could boost Winslet's prospects for the same prizes at the Academy Awards, of which the nominations come out on January 22. Winslet has been nominated five times at the Oscars but has yet to win.
British actor Tom Wilkinson took the TV supporting actor Globe for his part in John Adams and Irishman Gabriel Byrne won a TV drama actor award for his role in the US series In Treatment.
Sally Hawkins, who played the girlfriend of Little Britain's stage hypnotist Kenny Craig, earned the best actress prize in a musical or comedy as an eternal optimist in Happy-Go-Lucky.
Colin Farrell won the Globe for musical or comedy actor for In Bruges, in which he plays a hitman lying low in a Belgian tourist town.
Steven Spielberg was honoured with the Globes' Cecil B DeMille Award for lifetime achievement.
And Heath Ledger won the supporting-actor Golden Globe nearly a year after his death, earning the prize for his turn as the Joker in the Batman blockbuster The Dark Knight. The award was accepted by the film's director Christopher Nolan.
