Brain-ops man to jog length of UK

A businessman who has had 29 life-saving brain operations has set a start date to jog the length of the UK.

Simon Lannon, who is raising money for the hospital that saved his life, will jog back to his home city of Liverpool after jogging from Land's End, Cornwall, to John O'Groats in Wick, Scotland.

The 30-year-old also plans to increase the first leg of the journey, which he starts on June 1, by passing through Liverpool on the way to Scotland.

Mr Lannon, who has raised more than £5,000 towards his £60,000 target for The Walton Centre for Neurology and Neurosurgery NHS Trust in Liverpool, said: "Training's going fantastically well. I'm doing 10 to 15 miles, four to five nights a week comfortably now. I also do weight training, cardio and core training in between each day.

"I was planning to cycle back to Liverpool but I've decided to drop the bike because jogging would be more of a challenge for me. I'm getting all the right support from Executive Fitness where I train, my personal trainer and my family and friends. Everything's well on track.

"I've got quite a bit to go towards the £60,000 target but I'm sure it will be no problem as I'm travelling up the country and more and more people support me."

Mr Lannon, who is a managing director of an architectural design and development company, has been cared for at The Walton Centre for Neurology and Neurosurgery NHS Trust since he was diagnosed with hydrocephalus, a birth defect which means fluid does not drain away from his brain.

During his operations he had a permanent titanium valve fitted in his head, and has several shunts - a type of catheter - surgically implanted into the ventricles, the main cavities in the brain.

The valve system regulates the pressure in Simon's head and opens once it reaches a certain point, allowing the fluid to drain away.

Speaking about his condition, he said: "I've had a lot more headaches the past couple of months but that's due to my condition not down to me training more. So I am, more or less, taking painkillers every day but the training helps me combat and deal with my condition."
