Brazil fraud case pair spared jail

Two British law graduates arrested in Brazil on suspicion of fraudulently claiming they were robbed have been sentenced to community service.

Shanti Andrews and Rebecca Turner, both 23, admitted charges of attempted insurance fraud at a court hearing in Rio de Janeiro earlier this week.

Andrews, from Kent, and Turner, from Berkshire, were arrested on July 26 after allegedly telling police that belongings totalling about £1,000 were stolen during a bus journey while they were on a nine-month world tour.

The pair, who both studied at the University of Sussex, were given community service sentences, local media reported.
