Breast cancer victims 'ignored'

A majority of UK women with advanced "metastatic" breast cancer feel they are being ignored, it has been claimed.

Of British patients taking part in a global survey, 60% believed metastatic breast cancer (MBC) received too little public attention.

Half reported being afraid to talk openly about their experiences.

The results suggest a taboo still surrounds cancer that has started its deadly spread around the body.

Metastatic cancer kills by attacking vulnerable parts of the body such as the liver and brain, and can also result in severe pain.

The new survey commissioned by the pharmaceutical company Pfizer questioned 950 women living with metastatic breast cancer in nine countries.

Two thirds of British participants wanted to see increased public awareness of MBC. A large proportion also called for greater media attention focused on people and public figures with the disease.

Ninety two per cent of UK patients thought the disease had negatively impacted most parts of the lives - a significantly higher proportion than the worldwide figure of 67%.

The BRIDGE (BRIDging Gaps, Expanding outreach) survey results were presented today at the 11th International Conference on Primary Therapy of Early Breast Cancer in St Gallen, Switzerland.

Professor Lesley Fallowfield, from Cancer Research UK and the University of Sussex, a member of the BRIDGE steering committee, said: "In many countries, the public face of breast cancer has largely been focused on early stage disease, which has led to a deficiency of resources and attention for those who develop metastatic breast cancer."
