Britain braced for more storms

Britain is facing a second day of extreme weather as the lull in the storms battering the country proved short-lived.

As the clean-up from Monday's gales continued, forecasters warned a new storm front would arrive.

The whole country will see high wind speeds, and in some areas it will gust up to 85mph and bring with it snow.

The Met Office said "temporary blizzard conditions" could take hold in some upland areas.

Northern Ireland, North Wales, and the North West of England will see the worst of the weather, as a storm front flies in from the North Atlantic.

It will sweep across the Midlands during Wednesday and is predicted to reach the east coast at Essex.

Met Office forecaster Barry Gromett said: "The warning is specifically for severe gales but we should not forget the snow.

"There's likely to be temporary blizzard conditions across the highest parts of northern England and southern Scotland."

Forecaster John Hutchinson from MeteoGroup said the winds were likely to bring down trees, power lines and cause some structural damage.

Monday's storms left thousands of homes without power. Around 2,400 properties in Kent and Sussex are still without electricity.
