A band of low pressure will arrive from the Atlantic, bringing gusts of up to 90mph in western areas.
Elsewhere, heavy rain is likely to make Saturday a washout for many and those heading for the hills are being warned of snow showers.
The Met Office has issued severe weather warnings for Northern Ireland and the west coast of Britain.
Northern Ireland, Strathclyde and the Highlands of Scotland will see winds of between 80mph and 90mph. In Wales, the North West and South West of England, gusts of 70 to 80mph are expected.
Tiffany Curnick, a forecaster at MeteoGroup UK, the weather division of the Press Association, said: "Last week's cold snap was caused by low pressure coming over from the continent.
"But now the wind has changed direction and is coming in from the west.
"Temperatures will be milder but the moisture from the Atlantic will mean heavy rain."
Saturday's band of rain will cover the whole of the UK, starting in Scotland and Northern Ireland in early morning and arriving in London and the South East by the evening.
Sunday should see bright spells and just a few showers in the east of England but it will remain unsettled in the west and on high ground. Another band of rain will cross the country on Sunday night before the skies clear again for a largely dry but blustery Monday morning.
