British hostage freed in Nigeria

A British hostage captured in Nigeria's fractious southern oil region has been released.

He was one of two foreign workers abducted from a production barge near Calabar in Cross River State on the evening of July 8.

Both the Briton and his Bulgarian colleague were released unharmed and are now being looked after by company representatives, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) said.

The pair were working for Exprotech (Nigeria), a division of UK-based Expro Group, when they were abducted.

The two consultants were working on the Agbani production barge, which is owned and operated by a Nigerian operating company, when gunmen came on board at about 8pm local time on July 8.

The pair were abducted as three-year-old Margaret Hill, the daughter of British national Mike Hill, was released after being held by gunmen in Nigeria for three days.

Margaret was snatched from a vehicle on the way to school in southern oil hub of Port Harcourt.

Mr Hill, who is originally from Murton in County Durham but has lived in Nigeria for about 10 years, works in the energy industry and runs a popular nightspot in Port Harcourt,

Kidnappings in the region have generally involved foreign, male workers of international companies presumed to have the resources for ransom payments.

About 150 expatriates - some 20 of them British - have been seized in the oil-rich Niger Delta already this year.
