The soldier, from the 4th Battalion The Rifles died after an indirect fire attack on the Provincial Joint Co-ordination Centre in Basra early on Wednesday morning.

The soldier's next of kin have been informed, the Mod said.

The soldier is the 152nd to be killed since hostilities in Iraq began in 2003.

In a statement, the MoD said: "It is with great sadness that we must confirm the death of a soldier from the 4th Battalion The Rifles as a result of an indirect fire attack on the Provincial Joint Co-ordination Centre in Basra in the early hours of this morning (local time)."

The co-ordination centre, in the middle of Basra city, is used as a base by both coalition forces and local Iraqi security forces.
