British soldiers die in Afghanistan

Two British servicemen have been killed in a blast in southern Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence said.

A soldier from 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery and a Royal Marine from 45 Commando Royal Marines died on Wednesday night.

They were killed during an operation against enemy forces north east of Gereshk in central Helmand Province.

Their next of kin have been informed.

Commander Paula Rowe, spokeswoman for Task Force Helmand, said: "The tragic loss of these two brave servicemen is a bitter blow to Task Force Helmand.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with their family, friends and all those who served with them at this difficult time."

Brigadier General Richard Blanchette, spokesman for the Nato-led International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan, said: "Our thoughts are with the families of these brave servicemen who gave their lives for the people of Afghanistan.

"We will continue to fight for the cause for which they made the ultimate sacrifice."

The deaths take the total number of British servicemen and women to die since the start of operations in Afghanistan in October 2001 to 141.
