Briton drowns on Spanish beach

A 39-year-old British man drowned on a beach in Spain, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office has said.

Reports said Russell Hawkes, of Basildon, Essex, was on honeymoon at the time of his death on Monday afternoon in Fuengirola, on the Costa Del Sol.

The Malaga-based Sur newspaper said Mr Hawkes' new wife looked on as paramedics failed in their attempts to resuscitate him on the beach.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: "We are able to confirm that a British national drowned on October 20 in Fuengirola.

"The next of kin have been informed. We are providing consular assistance."
