Briton escapes US campus massacre

A British student escaped the American university massacre by hiding just yards away, his parents have revealed.

George Barnwell, 20, from Kings Heath, Birmingham, was in his dormitory at Virginia Tech with his girlfriend when the gunman opened fire in the building next door.

Thirty-two people were killed in the massacre at Virginia Tech University on Monday. The gunman then shot himself.

George's father Charles, an IT consultant, said: "George and his girlfriend were both locked in the dorm building all day, so they knew as much as us about what was happening.

"Some of George's friends were walking across the campus when the shooting started, and they just ran for it - that seemed to be the advice the police were giving."

Speaking at the family home, his mother Jenny added: "Both incidents were close to where they were - the second was in the engineering building where George would often be.

"Fortunately he wasn't at the time."

George, an engineering student at Sheffield University, is coming to the end of a year-long exchange with Virginia Tech.
