Reports said graphic designer Paul Winter, 42, who moved to Miami from Tunbridge Wells, Kent, was shot several times in front of his wife Jennifer and her seven-year-old twins.
The shooting happened on Friday after Mr and Mrs Winter picked her children up from school and dropped them off at the home of her ex-husband, Cristobal Palacio, for his court-ordered week of custody.
The Miami Herald, citing court and police reports, said that as the couple were about to drive off, Palacio emerged from the house and began yelling.
Mr Winter, who was planning to help celebrate his wife's 37th birthday on the night of the shooting, got out from his car and was then shot several times, according to Miami-Dade detective Juan Segovia's arrest report.
Palacio was charged with first-degree murder and will appear at Miami-Dade Circuit Court on November 17.
Mr Segovia wrote in his arrest report that Palacio confessed to the killing, but his brother claimed the shooting was self-defence.
Mr Winter's father, Michael, who lives in Palm Coast, Florida, told reporters that he received a frantic telephone call from his daughter-in-law moments after the shooting.
He said: "Paul never usually went to the ex-husband's house, but this time he did. The ex-husband appeared, and all I know is that he took out a gun and shot him six times.
"It happened right in front of the children and Jen, who tried her best to save his life. She was giving him resuscitation. I got the phonecall from Jen minutes after Paul was shot."
