Britons admit sedition charges

Two British missionaries pleaded guilty to sedition charges in a Gambian court, the Foreign Office said.

David and Fiona Fulton were arrested late last month in the West African country after allegedly sending a letter to individuals and groups criticising Gambia's government.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: "I can confirm that David and Fiona Fulton pleaded guilty at their trial today. The court has been adjourned to later this month, when they will be sentenced."

The couple will be hoping for a more lenient sentence as a result of their guilty plea, and their defence lawyer is asking they avoid jail.

British consular staff last visited the Fultons on December 22 but their lawyer confirmed today that the pair are both in "good health".

Gambia is a former British colony and has been ruled by the same regime after Yahya Jammeh claimed presidency following a military coup in 1994 - it is predominantly Islamic.

Mr Fulton, 60, a former British Army Major originally from Troon, Scotland, and Mrs Fulton, 60, originally from Torquay, were arrested on November 29.

The pair were held separately following their arrests and were not granted bail.

Mr Fulton was detained at high security Mile Two prison outside the capital Banjul. It is described as a "tough" former colonial jail built during the days of the British Empire.

Mrs Fulton was held with their two-year-old adopted daughter Elizabeth at a police station in the capital. However, a friend who did not wish to be named said she was "treated well" and police officers even sent out for nappies for the young girl.
