Britons donate £8m to Burma victims

Britons have now donated a total of £8 million to an appeal to help survivors of of Cyclone Nargis.

The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), an umbrella group representing 13 major charities, said this generosity had helped aid reach 600,000 people in Burma.

Aid agencies have voiced concerns that the public may have been put off giving money by wrangles between the Burmese regime and foreign governments over access for relief.

DEC chief executive Brendan Gormley said: "I'm delighted that the British public have recognised what a difference their donations can make and are continuing to give."

He urged people to continue donating to the fund, which is ensuring that food, water and medical supplies get to thousands of vulnerable people in the affected areas.

"This money is saving lives right now in Burma, but with a disaster of this magnitude there is always much, much more that could be done," he said.

"Whilst hundreds of thousands of people have been reached there are many more who still desperately need our help.

"We urgently need more funds if we are to continue to reach more people."

To make a donation to the DEC's Burma cyclone appeal, visit www.dec.org.uk or call 0870 60 60 900.
