Britons may face more Thai chaos

Thousands of British tourists stranded in Thailand may face further delays getting home after the Foreign Office said it was unclear if they could fly by Friday.

Thailand officials have promised its main airport will be open by the end of the week after Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat was forced from office.

But the Foreign Office said it was investigating whether tourists would in fact be able to leave as soon as that.

"The situation is fairly fluid at the moment," a spokesman said. "We're working with the major airlines and tour operators on the possibility of laying on additional flights from Chiang Mai and Phuket."

Around 5,000 Britons are estimated to have got stuck in Thailand following the occupation by anti-government protesters of the main international Suvarnabhumi airport last Tuesday and the smaller Don Muang airport last Wednesday.

Both airports were shut down and the capital cut off to air traffic.

Regional airports in the country may still be congested despite an end to the airport sit-ins on Tuesday, the Foreign Office warned.

Tourists currently waiting to leave were advised to keep in contact with their airlines or tour operators.

On Tuesday, Thailand's Constitutional Court convicted the top three ruling parties of electoral fraud in the 2007 vote that brought them to power.

Mr Somchai was banned from politics for five years and a government spokesman said the six-party governing coalition would step down.
