Britons moved from Thai airport

British tourists trapped by anti-government demonstrators at Bangkok's main airport have been moved out of the area, according to a Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) spokesman.

Several hundred Britons were among an estimated 3,000 people who became stranded at Bangkok airport after it was occupied by the People's Alliance for Democracy, which wants to topple Thai premier Somchai Wongsawat.

An FCO spokesman said: "We understand that the British nationals who were at the airport have been moved to hotels.

"We had consular staff at the airport to provide assistance though they have now left as they are no longer needed. We stand ready to offer any help of course."

He said he did not know how many British citizens had been trapped at the airport.

Thai authorities shut down Bangkok's domestic airport on Wednesday after it was also overrun by protesters.

British tourists described the "chaos and confusion" after they were caught up in the protests.

One of them, stand-up comic Harry Bedford, 40, from Greenwich, south London, said he had spent hours waiting at the airport.

He said: "I was supposed to fly back with Thai Airways but the flight was scrapped. We could hear protests going on and could glimpse yellow-shirted demonstrators.

"But it was very difficult to know exactly what was happening. First they shut down all the TVs, then there was no access to computers. There were no announcements and it was all very confusing and chaotic."
