Britons soak up Bank Holiday sun

Millions of Britons have been making the most of a welcome spell of warm and dry Bank Holiday weather.

Almost all of the UK has been basking in summer sunshine after enduring weeks of wet and miserable conditions.

The Midlands and East Anglia enjoyed the best of the warm weather with temperatures reaching 25C (77F).

And forecasters predict the dry, settled conditions will last into Bank Holiday Monday, despite temperatures dropping a couple of degrees.

Jeremy Plester, of MeteoGroup UK, the weather division of the Press Association, said: "Things will gradually start cooling down but there still won't be any rain.

"For the rest of the week there is a nice big high pressure system sat out to the west of the country which at the moment is feeding coolish but quite dry air across the UK."

On Saturday, Shobdon in Herefordshire was the hottest spot in the country with temperatures peaking at 28C.

Only western Scotland has seen any wet weather over the holiday weekend with a couple of millimetres of rain falling in highland areas.

The dry, sunny weather has prompted many Britons to head for the coast to soak up some of the sun. More than 18 million vehicles are expected to hit the roads over the Bank Holiday break.

On Saturday, almost a third of people enjoying the long-weekend headed to the seaside, the AA said. Brighton, Bournemouth and Blackpool were among the top destinations, according to figures from AA route planner.
