Around a third of people who lost belongings had their pockets picked, while 21% said their accommodation was broken into and 11% lost valuables left in their car, according to insurer swiftcover.com.
A further 17% of people had things stolen while they were close by, such as losing their handbag while they were eating in a restaurant, but only 6% of those questioned said they were mugged.
A quarter of people said the total value of the items stolen was less than £50, while 56% lost between £50 and £500, and 12% said they had valuables worth more than £500 taken.
People were most likely to be victims of crime in Spain, with 37% of people who had suffered a theft while on holiday saying it happened in Spain, followed by 19% of people in France and 9% in the UK.
