A murder inquiry was launched after the bodies of 25-year-old Michelle Thomson and her brother Ryan Thomson, seven, were discovered.
They were recovered from their father's house at Muiredge Cottages in Buckhaven, near Kirkcaldy, on the east coast of Scotland.
Their father, Robert Thomson, 49, is receiving treatment for injuries in Dunfermline's Queen Margaret Hospital, Fife Police said.
Officers have set up an incident room and are carrying out door-to-door inquiries in the area.
Fife Police confirmed that other family members, including the children's mother, have been informed of the tragedy.
The force are appealing for any members of the public who may have been around the Percival Road and Methilhaven Road areas to contact them.
Chief Inspector Andy Morris said: "This is a terrible tragedy which has shocked the entire community, including the police officers who are involved in the investigation.
"We are working with community representatives, including the area's four councillors, to provide reassurance and support to both the family and residents of Buckhaven to help them cope with these very difficult events.
"I appreciate there will be some disruption in the local community over the next few days and I am seeking the support of the residents to bear with us during this time. There will be an increased number of community police officers in the area for additional support if required."
