Brown appoints new Cabinet team

Prime Minister Gordon Brown has named Jacqui Smith as Britain's first female Home Secretary when he unveiled his first Cabinet on Thursday.

He has handed rising star David Miliband the plum job as Foreign Secretary. Mr Miliband, 41, becomes the youngest MP to hold the role since David Owen in 1977. His appointment to succeed Margaret Beckett will inevitably be seen as reward for resisting temptation to stand against Mr Brown as a Blairite leadership candidate.

Alistair Darling takes over as Chancellor from Mr Brown. Alan Johnson will be the new Health Secretary, switching from education, as the Prime Minister puts the finishing touches to his new administration.

Peter Hain is named as Work and Pensions Secretary, James Purnell as Culture Secretary and Hilary Benn is switching from Department for International Development to Environment replacing Mr Miliband.

Douglas Alexander takes over Mr Benn's old job.

The Department of Trade and Industry is to be renamed the Department for Business and Enterprise. John Hutton is moving from work and pensions to be the new minister heading the department.

Jack Straw becomes Justice Secretary and Lord Chancellor, and Des Browne remains Defence Secretary. Shaun Woodward becomes Secretary of State for Northern Ireland.

Harriet Harman is Leader of the House of Commons, Hazel Blears was named as Communities and Local Government Secretary

Education is split between Ed Balls as Secretary for children, schools and families, and John Denham as Secretary for innovation, universities and skills. Ruth Kelly becomes Transport Secretary.

Geoff Hoon is the new Chief Whip, Ed Miliband is Secretary for the Cabinet Office and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, Andy Burnham is Chief Secretary to the Treasury and the Cabinet is completed with Leader of the Lords Baroness Ashton.
