Brown backs Bush over rescue plan

Gordon Brown has vowed Britain will stand alongside the US during the current period of financial turmoil.

The Prime Minister, who flew into Washington from New York to meet with US President George Bush, expressed support for the proposed 700 billion US dollar (£380bn) financial rescue package.

Speaking after 90 minutes of talks in the White House, the Prime Minister said: "America and Britain have always stood together as one in times of difficulty and challenging times, and I have told President Bush that facing global turbulence Britain supports the US plan.

"Whatever the details of it, it is the right thing to do."

Mr Brown, sitting alongside President Bush in the Oval Office, also called on other world leaders to back the proposed bail-out for ailing banks.

He said: "America deserves the support of the rest of the world in securing stability in the markets."

Mr Brown said they also talked about the "pathway forward" and his proposals for reform of the world financial markets.

Following the meeting, which lasted more than twice the expected 40 minutes, Mr Brown said that the President was "confident" he would get a deal with Congress.

Earlier, in an address to the United Nations General Assembly in New York, the Prime Minister called for an end to "the age of irresponsibility" in the financial sector.

"This has been an era of global prosperity," he said. "It has been an era also of global turbulence, and where there has been irresponsibility we must now say clearly that the age of irresponsibility must be ended."
