Brown calls for 'fairer' future

The global financial crisis should be used as an opportunity to move towards a fairer and more equal world order, PM Gordon Brown told African leaders.

Mr Brown was speaking at a summit of African leaders including the presidents of Liberia, Tanzania and Botswana designed to ensure that the continent's voice is heard ahead of the G20 economic meeting in April.

The PM said the downturn which started in America was now hitting the poor countries of Africa, with 100 million people in danger of poverty.

A gathering of G20 finance ministers in Sussex agreed at the weekend to increase International Monetary Fund (IMF) resources "very substantially" to help emerging and developing economies cope with the credit crunch.

Britain also pledged £200 million to a new fund to help the poorest people in the world through the turmoil ahead.

The money was awarded to the Rapid Social Response Fund which is being managed by the World Bank.

Mr Brown said that assistance from the World Bank and IMF should not be attached to the usual conditions to cut public spending and make efficiencies.

And he backed calls for the G20 meeting to agree greater representation for Africa on the international financial institutions.
