Brown fails to impress voters

Gordon Brown's handling of the financial crisis has failed to improve Labour's prospects at the next general election, according to a new poll.

While most believe the Prime Minister has handled the situation well, only 13% said they were more likely to vote Labour as a result, an ICM survey for the News of the World found.

Another 22% said they were less likely to vote Labour, while 59% told the pollster that Mr Brown's response to the financial turbulence would make no difference to how they vote.

This will be unwelcome news for Labour MPs hopeful that the premier's well-received handling of the crisis will help cut the Tories' well-established lead in the polls.

It comes despite 54% of respondents to the same poll saying they felt Mr Brown had done well battling the turmoil. Only 36% said he had done badly.

ICM also found that Mr Brown and his Chancellor, Alistair Darling, were more trusted to handle the crisis than their Tory counterparts, David Cameron and George Osborne.

Some 43% said they would prefer to have Mr Brown and Mr Darling in charge for the present circumstances, compared to 35% for Tory leader Mr Cameron and shadow chancellor Mr Osborne.

ICM interviewed 1,041 adults by telephone between October 15 and 17, weighting results to the profile of all adults.
