Brown in first visit to China as PM

Prime Minister Gordon Brown is flying to China for his first visit to the economic powerhouse since taking over at No 10.

The premier's trip will also take in India, another emerging force in the global economy.

Talks are expected to centre on trade and the environment, with Mr Brown having declared "tens of thousands" of British jobs could be created with an expected 50% increase in business with China over the next two years.

The Prime Minister will also want to hear first hand about preparations for this year's Olympics in Beijing, setting the scene for London hosting the next summer games in 2012.

Human rights is another issue routinely raised by British Prime Ministers in Beijing, but there will be no hopes in Whitehall of a dramatic breakthrough.

The Chinese Government, led by Prime Minister Wen Jiabao and President Hu Jintao, are also unlikely to signal shifts in significant foreign policy areas such as Darfur, Iran and Zimbabwe, where they are seen by the west as obstacles to progress.

Mr Brown last visited China as Chancellor in 2005, but this will be his first visit as Prime Minister.

He said in an interview with News At Ten this week: "I can see in the next two years a 50% increase in our trade with China.

"I can see thousands of British jobs, perhaps tens of thousands of British jobs, over a period of time developing from this new relationship."

China's ambassador to Britain Fu Ying said: "The visit by the British prime minister to China will surely push the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Britain to a new height."
