Brown launches health research plan

Patients will be encouraged to take part in research and clinical trials under plans announced by the Prime Minister.

Gordon Brown said he wanted to see top universities and the NHS working closely together to "benefit each other in the years to come".

Ten academic health science centres will be created to bring together world-class research.

Existing hospitals and universities will be able to apply to become a centre although exact details have not been announced.

Mr Brown was speaking as he and Health Secretary Alan Johnson toured a new £2.2 million lab for treating heart patients at the Royal Brompton Hospital in west London.

The pair then sat down at a specially-convened heart research summit to discuss ideas with leading figures from health charities and other organisations.

Under the Government plans patients with any illness or disease will be made aware of research relevant to their condition and will be given the option to take part in clinical trials if they meet appropriate criteria.

Mr Brown said there was "a great deal to celebrate" as the NHS approached its 60th anniversary on July 5.

And he said an NHS Constitution would express a "commitment to medical research and investment" in it.

Also attending were Lord Darzi, who will release his next stage review report of the NHS next week, and Health Minister Dawn Primarolo.
