Brown praise for pensioners

Gordon Brown has hailed the contribution older people make to society as "massively" important to the success of the nation.

The Prime Minister spoke of his pride in hosting a reception for 150 pensioners at Downing Street held in recognition of their "great service".

He was speaking at the event held on UK Older People's Day, which is designed to recognise the work of the elderly in society.

He said: "We want to thank you for all the work you do on behalf of the communities of our country.

"All of you are here because you have given great service to the organisations and the communities in the areas in which you live.

"We are very proud to welcome you on this Older People's Day here."

He added: "This is a great time to celebrate what older people do and the contribution they make to the country."

The Premier spoke to the pensioners from across the UK, all of whom were involved in charity and community work as well as older people's forums.

Looking relaxed and accompanied by his wife Sarah, he signed autographs and received gifts, including a bottle of "Busters Best Bitter" from marathon runner Buster Martin, who claims to be 102.

As Mr Brown toured the state rooms he was surrounded by many of the eager pensioners shaking his hand and asking for photographs.
