Brown to unveil energy aid package

Prime Minister Gordon Brown is to unveil a package of help for people struggling with the soaring cost of energy, Downing Street confirmed.

There was no official confirmation of the contents of the package, but it is widely expected it will focus on assistance with energy efficiency measures like loft insulation, new boilers and double glazing.

More than 10 million households are expected to be offered help, including the country's poorest households.

The scheme is expected to provide the poorest customers with better home insulation and help in finding the best gas and electricity tariffs, according to the BBC.

Demands from unions and dozens of Labour MPs for a windfall tax on energy companies' "excessive" profits look set to be disappointed.

But there was increasing speculation that the energy companies will make increased contributions to the Government's carbon emissions reduction targets scheme.

Mr Brown's spokesman declined to discuss details of the package at a regular daily briefing in Westminster.

The Prime Minister will be grilled on the initiative when he faces the media for his monthly press conference at Downing Street.
