Brown vows to keep people in jobs

Prime Minister Gordon Brown has vowed to do everything in his power to keep people in jobs as unemployment soars.

The Prime Minister refused to comment on the latest unemployment figures, but insisted: "We will do everything we can to help create jobs and help people maintain jobs in the British economy."

Mr Brown went on: "Unemployment and redundancies are something we wish to avoid wherever possible and we will do everything in our power to help people to move in to jobs when vacancies exist, and to minimise the impact of unemployment."

He pointed out that the unemployment rate was higher in America, Germany, France and Italy than in Britain, but the Government would do all it could for those affected by the downturn.

The Department for Work and Pensions said there were more than 600,000 job vacancies across the country, insisting that the Government was better placed than ever before to help people get back to work.

Employment minister Tony McNulty said: "The UK has one of the strongest labour markets in the developed world, which along with the world class service provided by Jobcentre Plus is geared up to deal with the current global economic difficulties.

"There are still jobs available, with more than 600,000 vacancies across the country."

The DWP said a further £100 million would be made available to help people who lose their jobs.

The extra money would help unemployed people and those facing redundancy to retrain.

Mr McNulty added: "The new money we are announcing today will help fund training and support so that we can ensure people facing redundancy can access these vacancies and get back to work quickly."
