Bungle prompts police exam resits

Thousands of pounds of public money will be spent on police being forced to resit promotion exams following a bungle by Britain's largest police force, it was revealed.

Hundreds of police officers' results were scrapped following staff shortages and technical problems and it will cost £73,000 to repeat the examination and selection process for those hoping to be inspectors, according to a force spokeswoman.

The cost is equivalent to the annual salaries of two constables who have served two years with the Metropolitan Police. But the force insists that policing will not be affected despite a total of 562 officers taking the exam on March 12 at Alexandra Palace, London.
