Cadbury to be sentenced over scare

Confectionery giant Cadbury is to be sentenced over a Salmonella scare which led to the recall of more than a million chocolate bars.

Cadbury pleaded guilty earlier this year to breaching food and hygiene regulations in connection with the outbreak in the summer of 2006.

The company is expected to be sentenced by a judge at Birmingham Crown Court following a prosecution brought by Birmingham City Council.

The facts of the case have yet to be opened in court, but Cadbury has apologised for failing to realise a leaking pipe at its factory in Marlbrook, Herefordshire, posed a risk to health.

The firm's barrister, Anthony Scrivener QC, told a previous hearing that it had already spent £20 million on improvements, including changes to quality control procedures.

Cadbury recalled more than a million products on June 23 last year due to the salmonella contamination at Marlbrook, which the Health Protection Agency said was the most likely cause of illness in more than 30 people.
