Call for clean coal power stations

The Government has been urged to support a new generation of clean coal-fired power stations to slash CO2 emissions as well as create new jobs.

The TUC and the National Union of Mineworkers said millions of tonnes of emissions could be reduced if power stations were equipped with cleaner coal technology.

The move would also open up job opportunities in manufacturing industries, the two union organisations said ahead of a conference in Sheffield.

TUC general secretary Brendan Barber said: "The UK's long-term coal reserves are substantial but unless power stations start investing in clean coal technology, the use of coal in electricity generation will continue to needlessly damage the environment."

NUM national secretary Steve Kemp added: "Clean coal technology means a secure future for people employed in coal mining across the UK and major new employment opportunities for years to come."
