The Populus survey for The Times found that 54% of Lib Dem voters felt the party would do better without Sir Menzies, who took over from Charles Kennedy just 16 months ago.

However, 39% believe he should remain leader.

The poll follows the Lib Dems' unremarkable performance in the Scottish Parliament, Welsh Assembly and English local elections earlier this month.

Even Sir Menzies acknowledged that they represented a "mixed bag" and prompted speculation over his leadership by insisting that he would not quit.

The Lib Dems' overall poll rating, according to Populus, is down to 17% - the lowest since the middle of the last Parliament.

Populus interviewed 1,5403 adults by telephone between May 11 and 13.
