Call for social care system reform

A survey found that 64% of people said they had no plans to save any cash to fund the care they may need in their old age with a similar percentage expecting to rely on family and friends.
It comes as leading care charities called on ministers for a "fair and sustainable" funding settlement to reform the "creaking" social care system.
A poll of more than 1,000 UK adults found that 70% believe that the Government is failing to provide adequate support to family members who care for older relatives.
Yet when faced with a choice of local authority support, paying for private service or turning to a family and friend, two-thirds said they would opt for the latter.
The survey results were released to coincide with the "Right care Right deal" campaign.
Launched by Counsel and Care, Help the Aged and Careers UK, the charities are calling on ministers to find a new settlement for social care in England.
They urge the Government to put in place a system in which people have the choice and control to live their lives supported by a better funded care system.
Paul Cann, director of policy and external relations at Help The Aged, said there was a crucial need for a radical new system of social care in England.
