Call to eradicate child porn online

17 January 2008
Charity the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) has found evidence of fewer than 3,000 sites offering the sickening images.
The number of child porn "domains" on the web fell by nearly 10% from 3,052 in 2006 to 2,755 last year, according to the IWF's analysis.
The organisation said the total - which only includes English language sites - was a "concrete target" which could be tackled by international efforts.
IWF chief executive Peter Robbins said: "This year we have highlighted what we believe is a manageable number worldwide of such websites known to us. We hope that this revelation and the analysis and intelligence behind the numbers will lead to a better understanding of the issue and justify the need for more international partnerships to pool resources and thinking in order to find solutions.
"A co-ordinated global attack on these websites could get these horrific images removed from the web and those responsible investigated."
The organisation received 34,871 reports from the public about suspected child porn sites last year, up 10% on the previous 12 months, which the organisation said was partly down to increased awareness of its hotline.
However, after investigating the content of sites reported to them, the IWF discovered the number of English-language child porn sites had fallen.
IWF spokeswoman Sarah Robertson said: "It is the first year we have had a decrease like this. We have seen a fall both in individual websites and high-level websites."
Hardly any sites are traced to the UK, with most based in the US and Russia. The IWF called for a new international effort to disrupt and remove websites - particularly those which hop between servers and regions.
