Call to reduce disabled poverty gap

Campaigners called for more Government action to tackle poverty among the disabled after a survey showed they were twice as likely to live in hardship than others.

The Leonard Cheshire Disability report, Disability Poverty In The UK, says that disabled people are also more likely to live in poverty now than they were 10 years ago.

The report says there are an estimated three million disabled people living in relative poverty in the UK.

But the campaigning group says that, on average, disabled people's day-to-day living costs - for basics like mobility aids, care and transport - are 25% higher than those of non-disabled people.

The report calls on the government to urgently develop a strategy to end disability poverty.

Report author and Leonard Cheshire Disability public policy manager Guy Parckar said: "Disability poverty is one of the most significant, and most challenging, problems facing the UK today.

"The failure to specifically tackle disability poverty represents a gaping hole in the government's otherwise strong record on poverty."
