Call to step up doorstep recycling

Many householders still cannot recycle commonly used packaging via doorstep collection, according to a new survey.

Nearly 70% of people cannot recycle plastic in this way, Which? magazine found.

The consumer group wants councils to do more to bring recycling to householders' doorsteps.

It is urging anyone unable to recycle a big enough range of products via doorstep collection to complain to their local authority.

Which? editor Neil Fowler said: "Recycling is a cornerstone in the fight against climate change, but councils need to do more to make it as easy as possible to recycle on our doorsteps - or the net effect will be drastically reduced as people either get in their cars to drive to their local tip or do not recycle at all."

The Which? poll of 2,677 people found 68% could not recycle plastic packaging via doorstep collection.

The percentages of respondents unable to recycle other products via doorstep collection were 63%, 60% and 43% for drink cartons, food waste and glass respectively.

The Which? online poll of 2,677 panel members was carried out in March.
