Calypso-crazy climax for carnival

The streets of the capital went calypso crazy as the Notting Hill Carnival reached a colourful climax.

Hundreds of thousands of revellers were lured out by the bright Bank Holiday sunshine to enjoy the sights and sounds of Europe's largest street party.

Police reported that partygoers were behaving themselves, with the number of arrests down on previous years. By 4pm on Monday there had been just 83 arrests compared to around 123 at that time last year.

Some 220,000 turned up on Sunday for the children's parade with that number expected to at least double as the adults took centre stage.

The normally genteel atmosphere surrounding the upmarket west London suburb was transformed into a raucous street party as the celebrations gathered pace.

Ragga, reggae and samba beats blasted out at eye-watering levels as the air hung heavy with the smells of simmering goat curry and fiery jerk chicken.

Impromptu dancing involving hundreds of people burst out sporadically in the side streets adjoining the route.

But the stars of the show were the performers decked out in sequins and huge spiralling pastel-coloured costumes as they danced and drummed behind the floats making their way around the 3.5 mile route.

The carnival was later marred when a teenager was stabbed. The 15-year-old was attacked at around 7pm in the Monmouth Road area near to the centre of the carnival route.

A Met spokesman said: "At 1920 police were called to Monmouth Road where a 15-year-old was recovered with stab wounds. He was taken to a central London hospital where his condition is described as serious."
